Cosmetic Ingredients with Dermal Absorption Data

Dermal absorption (DA%) quantifies the fraction of a topically applied substance that penetrates the skin barrier and becomes systemically available. SCCS methodology for cosmetic safety assessment uses DA% directly in the Systemic Exposure Dose (SED) calculation: SED = (daily amount × concentration × DA%) ÷ body weight. When measured DA% is not available, SCCS applies a default of 50% (12th revision of the Notes of Guidance). Measured DA% values come from multiple public sources: SCCS opinions themselves, the EDETOX database from Newcastle University, HuskinDB (human skin permeation database), EPA Dryad skin absorption datasets, and the Roberts-Cheruvu Mendeley 2022 compilation. This cluster lists cosmetic ingredients with measured dermal absorption data from any of these sources.
