Plant Extracts & Botanical Ingredients

Plant extracts are derived from leaves, flowers, roots, bark, fruits, or seeds via water, alcohol, glycol, glycerin, or supercritical CO2 extraction. The chemical composition depends heavily on the plant species, growing conditions, extraction solvent, and extraction parameters, which makes safety assessment more complex than for single-molecule ingredients. Some botanical inputs face specific EU Annex restrictions (for phototoxic, CMR, or contaminant reasons), and many natural plant ingredients also contain declared fragrance allergens that must be listed separately on cosmetic labels when present above the EU declaration thresholds. This hub lists plant extract ingredients with their safety ratings and regulatory references.
